Being Part Of The Official Selection and Why It's Important
A great moment in a filmmakers career is being apart of a film festival, it gets better when your film is in the Official Selection . Even if it's a small festival, your film getting recognition for any type of award is a big deal. Not only do you get laurels to make your poster more appealing to sales agents, distributors and other festivals, you have a chance to win some hard cold cash.
Yes, some fests have prize money.
Money used to help take your film further or fund the next one. It's also a type of free marketing and publicity for those of us who like to ride that gravy train. Being included in the main competition of the festival is like a calling card, it tells everyone else that you're worthy of not only being watched, but spending money on to be watched. Maybe even getting a distribution deal on the spot. And that's just the beginning.
It's also a great way to network with other filmmakers and get feedback on your work. Sometimes as an 'Official selection' director or producer, you get invites to all the happening parties during that festival and the chance to rub elbows with other established film industry members.
